Nour’s Journey: From Refugee in Zaatari Camp to a Beacon of Hope
Here is the inspiring story of a young woman from Zaatari camp who found hope and purpose in volunteering, and expressed her gratitude through art:
When I first met Nour, she was a quiet, reserved 14-year-old living in Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan. Like many young people in the camp, she carried the weight of displacement, loss, and the daily challenges of life as a refugee. But behind her quietness I saw a spark of potential, a silent determination waiting for the right moment to emerge.
At one community event, I encouraged Nour to help set up the venue. She hesitated at first, unsure whether she could make a difference. But when she saw how her involvement helped bring people together, her confidence began to grow. She became more involved in volunteering and offered to help with small tasks whenever she could. Over time, Nour realized that she could bring about positive change, even in the simplest ways.
As she spent more time volunteering, Nour found a real sense of purpose. She built strong relationships with other volunteers and with her peers in the camp, and her energy and optimism began to inspire those around her. I could clearly see her transformation; she was no longer just a young girl in the camp, but a source of strength and hope for others.
One day, Nour came to me with a small drawing she had made. It was simple and beautiful at the same time, showing a group of people each holding another’s hand and supporting them, like a chain of strength and solidarity. She told me: “This is what you taught me: that together we can lift each other up, even when things are hard.”
Her drawing touched me deeply. It wasn’t just a work of art; it was a testament to her growth, her resilience, and her new belief in the power of community. Nour reminded me of the deep impact we can have on each other’s lives, and that the smallest acts of kindness can bring hope.
Today, Nour continues to volunteer in the camp, mentoring younger children and encouraging them to believe in their abilities. She has become a beacon of hope for those around her, proving that even in the hardest circumstances, a single spark of inspiration can open the door to remarkable change.
